Reviewing the past to understand how to progress the future.
Plain-language summaries · Full publication linked · Community-chosen studiesThis is where we gather previous, ongoing, and newly completed research on syringomyelia and its associated conditions. Old publications matter: reading them closely is how we learn to approach future studies so they are as effective as possible.
Any study the I AM HEARD Coalition has had direct involvement with is marked “Coalition Sponsored” in its title.
Less invasive options, and a faster road back.
Right now there is essentially one surgical approach for syringomyelia. That isn’t ideal. Spine surgery is something most people would rather avoid if they can, so our studies are, and will continue to be, focused on less invasive procedures and modalities that help a patient get back to the quality of life they deserve, quickly, instead of facing a lengthy rehab and, in many cases, ending up worse than before the operation.
Less invasive first
Procedures and modalities that treat the problem without major spine surgery, with cell therapy of especially high interest. Our Regenerative Therapy Access Program is where that interest meets real patients.
Quality of life, measured
We care about outcomes patients actually feel: pain, function, heat tolerance, heart rate, daily energy. Studies that measure those are the ones we follow closely and, where we can, help run.
Community driven
No one understands living with a rare disease better than the patients themselves. The Coalition only conducts research that has been approved through a community voting window: we gather proposals, and our community decides which ones we pursue.

Does Brachycephaly Increase The Risk Of Syringomyelia?
A literature review by a 17 year Syringomyelia patient
Proposed by people, chosen by the community.
A proposal comes in
Ideas come from patients, caregivers, clinicians on our medical board, and research partners. If you have one, email it to us.
The community votes
Proposals go to a community voting window. Only research our community approves moves forward.
The work gets done
We support the approved study alongside qualified clinicians and researchers, and we stay focused on outcomes patients can feel.
You read it here, plainly
Results are summarized on this page in plain language with the full publication linked, and labeled “Coalition Sponsored” in the title.
Found a paper we should break down?
Send us the study, the headline you saw, or the question your doctor couldn’t answer. If it matters to this community, we’ll read it and summarize it here, and we’ll say plainly what it does and doesn’t show.

Keep going
Start with what syringomyelia is, then explore procedures and surgeries, prescription medications, and our free patient handbooks. Plain-language reads on living with these conditions are on the blog.
Research is one part of how we help. Our core programs put resources into patients’ hands now: care packages, the grant program, and regenerative therapy access. I AM HEARD Coalition is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
